Green Councillor Lian Pizzey is working hard to make our roads safer. After listening to residents in our recent doorstep survey, it’s clear that potholes and speeding are top concerns.

Lian is working with Green County Councillor Gez Kinsella to ensure potholes are repaired properly the first time—saving money and preventing endless repeat fixes. Poor road conditions don’t just drain council funds; they also put drivers, cyclists, and motorcyclists at serious risk.

By attending local parish council meetings in Smalley, Horsley Woodhouse, Mapperley, and Shipley, Lian is hearing first-hand about the worst danger spots.

To tackle speeding through our villages, Lian is working with Derbyshire Police to coordinate community speedwatches in Horsley Woodhouse, Smalley, and Mapperley, helping to slow down traffic and making roads safer.

In our recent doorstep survey, Kirk Langley residents shared their concern about the lack of pedestrian crossing on the busy A52. To understand the issue, Green candidate Rachael Hatchett and Duffield Councillor Eva Long visited the village.

It quickly became clear how dangerous it is to cross the road, especially during rush hour when children are heading to school. The speed limit through the village is 40mph and accidents at the nearby four-way junction are common.

Local resident Tracey Brown shared her frustration, explaining that a crossing was promised when plans for new homes in the village were approved, but it has never been installed.

Green councillors in Amber Valley have been tackling the council about the housing developers who do not meet their planning commitments.

Tracey said, “I welcome the support from Green Party councillors in speaking up about this.  The village has suffered for years from the council’s failure to deliver the crossing.”

Green Councillors and campaigners are fighting to stop care home closures across Derbyshire.

Councillor Gez Kinsella is working to protect Belper’s Ada Belfield Care Home.

Although the home was built just four years ago at a cost of £11.5 million, Derbyshire County Council plans to sell or close it.

Gez has asked the Conservative-led council for financial details to explain their decision, but they refused to supply them.

Residents from the area formed Belper Together to fight the closure. Gez joined them to organise rallies outside Ada Belfield and County Hall, with more than 250 people marching in protest. Despite this public outrage, the council is pushing ahead with this unpopular decision.

Belper Together is now taking legal action against the county council for failing to follow proper procedures, especially the poor way they consulted with the public. Belper Together is also backing Belper Town Council in registering Ada Belfield as an Asset of Community Value, which will help delay the sale until after the May elections which Greens hope will result in a change of leadership.

The Green Team has been out and about delivering surveys to find out what matters most to our community. One concern that keeps coming up is anti-social behaviour.
Councillor Jamie Walls has heard a lot from residents about things like garden bonfires, fly-tipping, and even motorbikes speeding on pavements and in parks. Most people in Belper and Holbrook are respectful but it only takes a few to cause issues.

As a co-opted member of the Police and Crime Panel, Jamie will report these concerns to the local police and push for action. His key advice? If you’re worried about anti-social behaviour, report it! The more reports the police and council receive, the more likely they are to take action.
To report an issue or get further advice, visit the Amber Valley Borough Council website or call 01773 570222. You can also contact the police on 101. Let’s work together to keep our community safe and friendly.
