Belper Leisure Centre closure

Amber Valley Greens are hugely concerned to learn that Belper Leisure is threatened with closure and we are working tirelessly to do all we can to save this vital community resource. The people of Belper and surrounding areas need a leisure centre just as much as those of Ripley, Heanor and Alfreton.

Green County Councillor Gez Kinsella has had various conversations with the Centre Manager in the last few months about opposing closure and has been guided by her on what actions to take. He has made it clear to the Centre Manager that he and Amber Valley Green Party will do all we can to save BLC.

We would urge DCC and Amber Valley (both under Conservative control) to find emergency funding to keep the centre open as it is needed by all parts of our community, although we do understand that both have suffered greatly from funding cuts imposed by the Conservative government for many years. Our Green Party Councillors are in discussions with the Amber Valley Executive Director for Resources, to press them to take urgent action.

The Green Party has also taken positive, practical action. Gez has provided a grant for PIR sensors to reduce their electricity bills. Belper Community Energy, of which Gez is Chair have also been in detailed discussion with BLC about the supply of solar panels in order to significantly reduce their energy costs.

So Greens are fighting to save our leisure centre. We urge you to also write to your MP Pauline Latham. If you elect Greens you can rest assured that fighting for Belper Leisure Centre will be an urgent priority.
