Green Councillors and campaigners are fighting to stop care home closures across Derbyshire.
Councillor Gez Kinsella is working to protect Belper’s Ada Belfield Care Home.
Although the home was built just four years ago at a cost of £11.5 million, Derbyshire County Council plans to sell or close it.
Gez has asked the Conservative-led council for financial details to explain their decision, but they refused to supply them.
Residents from the area formed Belper Together to fight the closure. Gez joined them to organise rallies outside Ada Belfield and County Hall, with more than 250 people marching in protest. Despite this public outrage, the council is pushing ahead with this unpopular decision.
Belper Together is now taking legal action against the county council for failing to follow proper procedures, especially the poor way they consulted with the public. Belper Together is also backing Belper Town Council in registering Ada Belfield as an Asset of Community Value, which will help delay the sale until after the May elections which Greens hope will result in a change of leadership.
